Chapter 11

The shorts he gave to Wayne fit okay, a little loose but workable with a belt. Pad knew that Jack’s clothing wouldn’t fit either since Pad and Jack were the same height.

“Wait here. I’ll ask David about some shirts.”

Wayne nodded. “All right. But I can always get my gear at the VAQ.”

Pad walked to Aunt Maddy and David’s room. Their door stood partly open, and he could hear their voices.

“You should tell him.”

“I will, Dave, like I said. All in good time.”

Pad knocked on the door. David opened the door a little more and greeted him. “Good morning, Pad! Glad you’re up. We wondered how long it’d take for Jack and you to wake up.”

“Thanks. We probably shouldn’t have stayed up all night. Paying for it now.”

“I saw Jack earlier make a pot of coffee for you guys.”

“Yeah. That’s what woke me up. Anyway, David, Wayne stayed last night—”

David arched an eyebrow.

“Well, you’re an adult. We figured as much since you guys were still playing video games when we went to bed. And you don’t have to ask your aunt for permission.”

“Thanks. And I was hoping you have a couple of shirts he could borrow so we don’t have to go back on base to get his stuff cuz if it’s okay with both of you, I asked him if he could hang out with us for the weekend.”

“I don’t see why not. I don’t think your aunt will mind. She stepped into the bathroom and I’ll let her know. I don’t have a problem with it.”

“Thanks.”

“Wait here while I scrounge up some clothes.”

Pad stood by the doorway and peered inside. It hadn’t changed other than the new paint. Aunt Maddy had all the bedrooms painted, including hers, beige. The only exception was the guest room downstairs that Jen or Jack frequented when either came back to Tampa. Aunt Maddy left it a light green, the older color, only because it was Jen’s favorite color. As he waited, Pad noticed pill bottles on the dresser next to a stack of magazines.

“Hey, Pad, here’s three shirts. They’re extra large and should fit Wayne.”

“Thanks again, David.” Pad hesitated to leave. “Everything okay?”

David looked behind him, his attention to the bathroom before he answered. “Yup. Why do you ask?”

“Nothing. Just wanting to make sure.”

David didn’t face Pad, his head turned. “Everything’s okay.”

“Thanks for the shirts again.”

“No problem. He seems like a nice guy.”

Pad smiled. “I think so.”

Pad crossed the second floor to get back to his bedroom. Wayne sat on the bed, looking at Pad’s yearbook. Pad laughed.

“Hey. Don’t look through those!”

“Dude. Your hair here’s very boy bandish.”

“What? You didn’t have the frosted tips?”

“Uh. No. I came from a very traditional Mormon family that wouldn’t approve that.

I see Jack’s pictures are here too.”

“Yup, Jack, Jen, and me. All graduated same year. Went through middle school and high school together.”

Wayne closed the annual for a moment and eyed Pad. “So you and Jack?”

“What?”

“Were you guys a couple?”

“No!” Pad shook his head violently. “He’s like a brother to me.
